The network grew out of research and development in cooperation between academia, industry, local and regional administrations in the Greater Stockholm area and users. Most of the development efforts have been contributed by students in various project assignments.

Stokab is sponsoring by providing all optical fiber backbone connections. Stokab helped StockholmOpen.net to expand from just covering the IT-university to span over different hot spots in the greater Stockholm area. They are also funding student projects related to the StockholmOpen.net concept.

Svenska Bostäder have funded the KistaIP.Net network at the student dormatories. They are also sponsoring by funding student projects related to the StockholmOpen.net concept.
